    What is Overtime Pay?

    Most hourly employees in California are entitled to a special overtime pay rate for any hours worked over a total of 40 in a single work week (defined as any seven consecutive work days by the Fair Labor Standards Act).

    Additional state labor laws in California also entitle any employee who works for more then 15 hours in a single day to be paid at least one and a half times their normal rate for all hours worked over the overtime limit.

    California's Overtime Minimum Wage

    Overtime pay, also called "time and a half pay", is one and a half times an employee's normal hourly wage. Therefore, California's overtime minimum wage is $24.00 per hour, one and a half times the regular California minimum wage of $16.00 per hour.
